Are you the adventurous type? Willing to life on the edge? Take risks? Do you play for high stakes or are you the play for fun sort of poker player? Do you have what it takes to walk away and do you know when to run? Did you know there is Poker in Portland? Poker is an addiction that knows neither age, social status, sex nor religion. For those who have it in their blood it is hard to purge. For those who love the game, love the suspense, the skill and the thrill of the illusive big money, poker has no rival.

Poker is a combination of card games that share hand rankings and betting rules. The games differ in how the hands are formed and cards are dealt and even if high or low hands win the pot. Most poker games begin with a round of betting. The play always travels to the left. Players must either match the maximum bet or fold. If you fold you lose the amount you have bet so far in that hand. To stay in the game a player can either match the bet or raise the bet. If all players fold on one round the remaining player takes the pot.

There are variations in the game of poker that are almost endless, but a few of the most common are:

1. Stud Poker: In stud poker three to seven cards are dealt to each player. There is no drawing. The most common game of stud poker is seven-card stud, each player is dealt two extra cards( Four face-up, three face down) the player must make the best possible hand out of the cards they are dealt. A round of betting takes place after each new card is dealt.

2. Straight: Five cards are dealt to each player. One round of betting. This is the oldest form of poker and was played by gentlemen around the American Revolution. This form does not lend it itself to complex strategy and is not as popular today.

3. Draw poker: Each player is dealt a complete hand. Betting starts before the cards are viewed. Players can trade their unwanted cards to the dealer in hopes of improving their hands. Bets are placed between each trade.

4. Community card poker: Each player is dealt cards face down with a number of face-up cards in the center of the table that are community cards. Each player can use the community cards to enhance their own hands.

Whichever form of poker you prefer, playing with others who also love the game is where the fun lies. There are poker clubs in Portland bringing players together for an evening tournament of fun and high stakes. Or for the more conservative player there are tournaments with lower stakes. Find friends; find entertainment with poker in Portland for a great night out. Remember, "You got to know when to hold em, know when to walk away and know when to run!"
