With the increase of crime in society, to have system monitoring has become common practice in houses and cars and in commercial establishments such as museums, offices, businesses and workplaces. It is of the utmost importance that any place containing valuables ought to be fitted with a monitoring system to deter the possibility of theft.

These systems basically consist of a fitted alarm system which reacts in response to detecting unidentified and unwanted intrusion with an alarm and, in the more advanced systems, by contacting authorities. For example, a fitted monitoring system in a house would react when the occupants of the house have left it and turned the system on usually using a pin or key and an intruder tries to get in or breaks in, this is when a very loud sound will be made in order to arouse attention from neighbours, etc.

In more advanced systems, like ones fitted at museums and businesses, the system would automatically process a signal to authorities, and police or security would attend to the call accordingly. While not all monitoring systems, especially ones fitted for households have cameras with continuous recording, the ones at businesses and other large companies or areas do consist of these more complete systems.

The benefits of these systems are not to be underestimated with the most obvious being, of course, protection from intruders; houses and businesses alike can be protected from unwanted guests and can be safe from robbery, to a certain extent.

Businesses that choose to incorporate these systems with continuous recording security cameras have the benefit of knowing if an employee or other person steal or shoplift for those at consumer based businesses from the stock. However, despite the fact that most places with fitted monitoring systems have a warning label or sign at the entrance that those who enter are being monitored, people still shoplift and employees still steal from companies.

The importance of these systems is grave, because despite the fact that robberies still occur in companies where these systems are used, it does not take from the fact that they are still very effective in reducing shoplifting and robberies.

Cars are also a great example of good systems, as with most cars the alarms go off as soon as an intruder attempts to force open the door. In some cars, the alarm goes off only after the ignition has been started; however, it is still effective in scaring away the intruder and attracting attention.

Another important aspect of monitoring systems which must not be forgotten is that monitoring systems need to be maintained regularly to ensure smooth running of the systems and to avoid possible collapse or shutdown thus resulting in theft of valuables and belongings.

Batteries would need to be checked on the portable alarm systems regularly and those which run of the mains power, the electric system of the property should be checked by a licensed electrician to ensure it, too, is running as it should be.

A common problem that faces users of alarm systems is that they do not appreciate the systems enough, and as a result may, out of laziness and ignorance, not turn on their systems sometimes. Therefore, we can conclude that the awareness of the importance of alarm and monitoring systems needs to be addressed by authorities and related to the general public to ensure that the systems are used to their full abilities and thus to ensure general safety of valuables. This should also include the elimination of the it will never happen to me attitude.
