What do you do when you head downstairs and there is water all over in your basement and it is coming from the laundry room. You were hurrying down the stairs to put a load in your dryer and now here is this mess. Call the plumber! You need help right away and here it is Saturday! This has to be fixed soon, so that the wash can be finished and the basement mopped up before there is mildew or mold to contend with.
Plumbers have been around to do work for people since Roman times. Back then, pipes were made of lead, and it has been surmised that excess lead that the people ingested actually brought down the Roman Empire because of the damage it causes to not only infants but also to adults. Today, most pipes are made of copper, however the new PVC plastic pipe is now used also. We are so dependent on our plumbing for comfortable living that we tend to take it for granted, and if a problem occurs, it is usually one of an emergency status. Pipes freeze in the winter if not kept warm and usually there are warnings about this on the television weather report. Trailer homes are especially vulnerable to freezing pipes.
But in this case, the plumber found evidence of tree roots in the sewer pipe have caused it to collapse, and this was ascertained through the use of a special camera put down the clean out. The pipe will have to be replaced, which means digging out the ground outside the house and may even include breaking up the sidewalk and replacing that also. The plumber was equipped with a special pump that helped to get rid of the water in the basement and has all the tools needed for all this work. If you had just planned ahead and had the sewer pipe "rooted" out during the spring, it might have kept this from happening, but the amount of roots in the pipe indicates that this has been going on for way too long.
You had better check with your insurance company to see if this is covered at least partially, because this is going to be expensive, but it is necessary to replace the pipe. I am sure you will be more careful in the future and schedule maintenance as it is needed for the new pipe. The large sewer pipes are still made on hard clay or cement, so there may be a root problem in the future. In some areas, plumbers will also supply you with a substance to flush down your toilet once a month or so to discourage roots from being attracted to the moisture in the sewer pipe. It is a good thing there was a competent plumber available on a Saturday.
