If you are installing commercial or roadway valve boxes, then installing a height adjustable model can be beneficial. There are several manufacturers who have designed risers that will adjust in height to accommodate varying elevations. This allows you to switch around the height if the road is resurfaced to a different height, which frequently happens. If it is not adjustable, you are stuck with a pothole in the road, and can cause accidents, flat tires, and other problems.
If your valve box is suddenly situated higher than the surrounding road or parking lot, then these special adjustable types designed to be broken off at the top and slipped back on, at a lower level than before. After breaking off the top section of the roadway model, you will then need to put the slot in the adapter and pour in some cement. Then, you will slip back on the top and push it down into the wet cement until it is the right level with the surrounding roadway or parking area.
If the valve box is now too low for the surrounding asphalt, such as if the roadway was torn partially up and replaced with more compact road materials, then it can be used and adjusted to the newer, lower lever. To make it sit lower in the roadway, you will need to put the insert the adjustable adapter into it and, while holding it level with the roadway, pour some cement around it. Then you should push the rim of the box into the cement, thus securing it at the proper level for the surrounding roadway and asphalt.
An adjustable model can be adjusted to an elevation height of between 2.5 inches high up to 8 inches high. This type is also useful in curb service, or in sidewalk areas near construction that may be torn up in the future or the surface or height of the sidewalk may be adjusted.
Adjustable valve boxes are easier for contractors to install than other types of roadway valve boxes, since you can adjust the height to meet varying needs. Whatever the level you need your box to be, you can use the same lid.
