Streamlining cash flow for large companies is the stuff that entire classes are taught about in business school. Normally there are discussions about how to raise money for everyday expenses like payroll and utilities. There are new computer programs that can actually remotely monitor the energy consumption and usage of facilities to see where adjustments can be made to save money. Lower utility costs translate into better profit margins. Comprehensive energy management systems are going to be able to look at many different aspects of a facility to make things run smoother. In many commercial and industrial facilities, there need to be backup power and communication systems in case of disruptions to the grids that supply power or communications. Even if communications remain active, without the power needed to continue running environmental systems like heating and air conditioning, computers and other vital aspects of the facility, there is no point in keeping a facility staffed in the case of a power loss. When the facility is a hospital or correctional center, keeping power and communications active is of paramount importance to keep things running smoothly.

Knowing what is happening with utilities goes beyond monitoring simple power usage. With facilities that heat with steam, there can be many ways to streamline and economically reduce power usage and natural gas consumption. This can literally translate into thousands of dollars across time for a single facility and millions of dollars across multiple installations. When there is a problem that occurs in an energy system, it can create a ripple effect that carries significant costs for energy, gas, water, environmental and other systems. Just like a leak in a faucet can lose many gallons of water down the drain over the course of a week, outdated and inefficient electrical systems can cost companies more than thirty percent more on their power bill every month. Retrofitting facilities with new florescent ballasts can pay for the capitol investment in a very short time period with the savings from the reduced electrical bills. While there could be many things that improve the bottom line of a business, having an expert monitoring what is going on and spotting issues before they become big problems will be the wisest course of action. By tying all the different devices together for monitoring, there are multiple ways of evaluating and monitoring the information gathered for the observation of the energy management systems.
