Finding a good job these days can be a prolonged, unpleasant endeavor. There are often far more applicants than positions, and prospects for an immediate improvement in the job market are slim. People who used to turn up their noses at certain kinds of work are now visiting the temp agency. These groups aggressively seek out businesses or companies that need to hire people on a temporary, and sometimes even full-time basis.

Temp agencies save a lot of time and effort for client businesses. By testing, screening and verifying potential employees, they can reduce the need for a company to have a full-time personnel department or human resources group. Not only do they screen potential skilled employees, they can verify an educational background, check references, and conduct preliminary interviews if necessary. For this work they are paid a fee, and they often specialize in certain fields.

Agencies usually act as surrogates for human resource departments. For businesses who wish to maintain their own HR department, however, there are now human resource specialists. Hr consulting people generally work with company management to address specific employment utilization issues. These consultants are also impermanent workers. When they have finished helping a particular group run more smoothly, their job is done, and they seek active consulting work elsewhere.

Consulting jobs usually last anywhere from three months to a year. This is in marked contrast to workers who wish to take advantage of permanent recruitment. A permanent recruiting agent seeks qualified employees matching the demands and needs of a particular company. The word "permanent" is somewhat of a misnomer these days, unfortunately, and is now generally understood to mean an employee who has passed the period of probation.

Placement agencies, on the other hand, differ from temporary recruiters in their main goals. They are used by employers primarily when there is an existing permanent part- or full-time job opening. They often maintain a large database of qualified job-seekers, and if a particular request is not part of their normal pool, they are able to do an intense search for the right person.

Some may seek jobs through more generalized employment agencies. These groups match employee qualifications and skills with current job openings, and in general act like an out-sourced human resources department. Their success depends on a good working relationship with those who hire, as well as those who seek jobs. A good employment group brings together both parties by doing the necessary preliminary footwork.

Regardless of whom you choose to help in your job search, there are some specific things to do beforehand. For those using a temp agency, the first step is finding the right one. Check the Internet listings for reviews and endorsements, and gather all pertinent resume information. When an opening is available, you will have to pass a skills test for that particular job, and if hired will be probably be subject to a background and credit check, in addition to drug testing.

Because an employer does not pay a fee until the right person is found, agencies work hard to recruit the best people. Even after being hired, the salary of a new employee is often paid by the agency until a period of probation has passed. A temp agency, however, benefits workers by offering immediate work, and sometimes even higher wages. For some lucky individuals, a temporary job can become permanent.
