A dome when chosen to be incorporated in the roof is a beautiful part of any edifice. This is a magnificent structural part of architecture. Its shape resembles half of an egg or a hollow upper half part of a sphere. This can vary in height, design, size and materials.

The geodesic is one variant of the style of domes. Tracing the history, the geodesic domes were based on the work of Richard Buckminster - an inventor, architect, engineer and mathematician. He challenged the traditional linear architectural structure. Thus his experiments were based on the co-ordinate systems of architecture which are located in all spheres. As materials can be very varied, the wood type of materials is reviewed.

Features

The features of wood domes are energy efficiency, superiority of strength, spacious, expandable, user friendly and eco friendly. As the domes consist of wood framed shells, there is better insulation, thus, one can save in the heating and cooling systems. The superior strength of geodesic wood domes can withstand any inclement weather making your residence or office a safe place to stay in.

Nothing can compare to a dome home because it is open and spacious inside. It has aesthetic appeal. You do not feel closed-in and it tends to give a breathing space for all dwellers. The dome shaped roofs can be expandable to suit different floors of buildings.

This type of dome roofing is easy to assemble - making it user friendly. Some do-it-yourselfer handles the task of putting the parts together. Blueprints of instructions are easy to follow and understand. The needed tools are not high -technology, just the ordinary everyday tools in the garage. As this is energy efficient, it becomes beneficial to the environment.

Components

Among the components of the geodesic wood dome are riser walls, struts, studs, plywood, skylights, connectors and base plates. The riser walls provide height to the structure - to as much as 8 feet high. Each section of the riser wall can be acquired already pre-assembled. All struts that go with the package are cut and drilled properly to meet the correct angle position. These are even color-coded which provides facility in assembly. The spruce is 2x6 inches installed 16" or 24".

The plywood is triangular panels which are structural exterior grade plywood. These are pre-cut and color-coded. The symmetry of the dome allows the use of skylight in any place within the structure. This also enables the owner to have option for use of solar panels and power thus making possible additional fuel efficiency. The connectors used are heavy duty and ensure the quality of workmanship. The base plates are solidly cut to the size of 4" x 6". These are pressure-treated which are mounted securely at the foundation or on the top plate of the riser wall.

Although geodesic domes had not been fully adopted in structural architectures, the future of this type of roof is foreseen to be highly utilized. With the shortage of space, the dome will be a solution to the rising problem of space.
