The decision to go for a home upgrade for pet owners has always presented a challenge as they are often clueless as to what kind of flooring would be suitable. Many wish to do away with carpets that have been there for many years mainly due to wear and tear as well as the rather difficult task of ensuring that the carpet is always free from urine stains and other odours pertaining to pet activity. On one hand they want the home to reflect their aesthetic taste and on the other they have the problem of maintenance due to the issues they normally face with pet movement around the house. Fortunately, porcelain floor tiles present a very viable option for such people.
It must be mentioned here that there are other issues pet owners have to contend with when it comes to maintaining carpets. Very often pet dog food contains dyes that leak and leave spots on the carpet. Then you have pet hair, wet, muddy as well as snowy paws to add to the problem apart from soft drinks spills due to human error. The issue of dust is also something that seems an insurmountable one despite regular vacuuming.
So why choose porcelain floor tiles over other options? To start with, home areas most prone to dust, grime, sand are the kitchen, bathrooms and the family room. There is merit in choosing porcelain for these areas over other options for the following reasons:
a) Hardwood though very promising aesthetically for the kitchen just does not retain its lustre thanks to the possibility of some spillage or the other.
b) Travertine can chip easily and is also prone to easy staining.
c) Cork, despite its ecological importance and green impact tends to again chip easily and that is a distinct possibility when you have to move furniture.
d) Vinyl just does not have the aesthetic appeal necessary.
e) Granite is a good option but a very costly one and considering the vast expanse to be covered is not a cost effective one.
f) Laminates are again like hardwoods and become susceptible to warping. They may not last beyond a period of five years and that is definitely not something you would want to undertake.
g) Marble is similar to granite in terms of the expenditure, but more prone to damage from pet movement.
Now given the above demerits of all the choices above, porcelain comes out the strongest due to the fact that it can retain its lustre and shine for a long period of time and is very easy to maintain. All you need is some soap water and a mop to get rid of any stains or spillage. Porcelain floor tiles are tremendously durable and tough with the result they will not chip off even if anything heavy were to fall on them. Most importantly, if at all you are required to replace a tile, you can easily do it by just removing it and replacing it with another one.
