Three Special Earth Science Project Suggestions You Could Consider for a Science Fair

A student's life is incomplete without science fair research. With the many subject matters which you might consider, you don't have to get stuck questioning what project to pursue. Just in case you are interested in earth science or are required to deal with an investigation with an earth science connection, below are a few of some project recommendations to consider:

Show the circulation of the sea basin

You could show the movement of the earth's plates by means of this science report. The supplies you require for the examination are a sheet of paper for typing, a set of scissors, an empty, round oatmeal box, or the so-called serrated knife. You might require to divide in two the paper into one-half-inch lengthwise strips. Try to cut a slit which measures about 0.64 by 12.5 cm on the portion of the box through the use of the knife. Bunch the strips of the piece of paper together then push them thru the slit you made. Keep the other ends of the strips with each and every hand and then separate them from one another over the box surface. The analogy of the research is that the box is used to make representation of a mid-ocean ridge while the slit is the rift valley, that is a narrow crack which you can find on the earth's crust. Molten rocks escape by the fracture and spread on both sides of the mid-ocean ridge. As new material moves out, the crust is moved apart and this operation is called the spreading of the seafloor.

Investigate if limestone could protect pine trees from acid rain

Limestone has long been seen to enhance soil and thus help to make grass as well as other shrubbery more healthy. As a science research, why not try to search into what other benefits limestone might offer to plant life? One question you may attempt to answer is if it can protect pine trees against the effects of acid rain. For the investigation you should have 2 potted pine trees as your experimental trees that you could fertilize using different amounts of limestone. You must also set aside another 2 potted pine trees to serve as your controls. Reproduce an acid rain solution and also sprinkle one of the control potted pines with it as the other one must be given regular water and limestone only. The acid rain solution will be sprinkled for any period of four weeks on the experimental trees. Monitor the situation of the trees everyday. Log your results in a logbook and make your conclusions after the agreed period.

Know whether acid snow or acid rain is more acidic

People have been aware of acid rain, however acid snow can also be a possible weather event. You can attempt to learn which of the two is much more acidic. You could estimate the level of acidity in rain or snow in your area using pH papers and the pH scale and evaluate your results. You could obtain these elements from science supply stores or even drug stores.

Be sure to learn as much as you can about the different earth science theories that are relevant to your project so you can explain your experiment's results better.
