One of the best software inventions is where the computer will react appropriately to what you are saying out loud and will then put these words into writing, preventing you from having to type it out yourself. This is the opposite of text to speech software. This software is where you can type things in to the computer and it will read out what it is that you have typed. Speech to text mac software is a brilliant thing to use when you wish to save time or are unable to type for whatever reason.
There are currently two different types of software which are available. The first type is called "command and control." This software allows you speak commands to your computer to control it; hence the name. There are various commands which the computer will be programmed to understand, such as; "Open Safari" or, "Open iTunes". Unfortunately the commands are already entered into the computer so the computer will only recognise those commands so it is necessary for you to familiarise yourself with these before using the software to maximise its potential.

The main drawback with this software is that it is programmed for English, which may not seem like a drawback, however it is set to understand English with an American accent. Which means it struggles with many other accents, which can lead to it getting a few things wrong.
The second type of software is called "dictation" software. This is the type that lets you write documents, it may be an article, an e-mail, or chatting to friends, which is done simply by speaking it out loud, there is no need for you to type whatsoever.
Currently there is only one type of software available for dictation. This software is called MacSpeech Dictate. This is the new and improved version of the original program developed by apple to dictate documents which was called iListen.
The benefits of these two types of speech to text mac software is obvious. The first saves you from having to click through your computer trying to find things, you simply need to voice your command and it will open these items for you. The second stops your thoughts from running away from you, many of us think faster than we can type or write so by using dictation software we can get our thoughts down and into text killing two birds with one stone.
