I've been fortunate enough to be married for almost five years, and while it has been blissful on the whole, our busy schedules and the process of settling into a routine has interrupted the romance. Almost anyone in a long-term relationship can relate.
But what is the surefire way to shake things up and reignite the spark? Spontaneity, of course! It's not easy for some men to put forward gestures and engage in activities without much prior thought, but if you know how to get your mind on the right track, then sweeping her off her feet all over again will be a cinch.
Does your special lady love fresh bouquets, but you can never remember to nab one before returning home? Set an alarm on your phone. Make it coincide with your payday so that you can have an excuse to be delayed in your commute. Of course, you don't necessarily want this to become predictable, so you can always adjust it to a few days before and/or a few days after so it's always a little random.
If flowers aren't her thing, then think of another small gift or gesture they she will enjoy. Bring home her favorite candy or a small gift that made you think of her. Naturally, you should gauge her responses to find out if these gestures mean as much to her as you hope, but most women find this kind of thoughtfulness touching.
Whisk her away from daily life. When shepherding the kids, wrangling the pets, and juggling PTA with a career and church bake sales simply becomes too much, she needs a break. Call the babysitter and pack a picnic or make reservations at her favorite restaurant for a surprise weeknight out.
Take it a step further by indulging in a short stay-cation. If you're working on a budget, that's okay--you don't have to book a suite. But to celebrate my successful completion of each semester while I was in college, my spouse would book one or two nights at one of our favorite Hollywood hotels and whisk me away. This might require some extra coordination on your part, and you certainly get extra points for surprising her (if she likes surprises, that is). It would be a great relief to her to escape.
Think back to those things that ignited your passion during your initial courtship. What drew you to each other? Try to play upon those things as you make each other your first priority and apply yourselves to rekindling the fire that has made your relationship so worthwhile.
