Most families would like to have full convenience of their homes, and eventually the accumulation of personal treasures can become overwhelming. When there is no room left for any more stuff, they might consider renting a self storage unit. They are also great for people who are relocating, and need a place to keep their belongings until the new home is ready for move-in.

Moving and self storage may not be the only time when shipping supplies are needed. The offices of these facilities carry a full line of such things as shipping tape, bubble wrap and cardboard boxes. They may also have shelving kits which can help increase the available room in a unit. With everything you need at one location you can take your time and work at your own speed.

Most locations of these facilities are open during hours that meet the needs of the people who rent from them. The front office may have shorter hours, but the area where the units are has security gate access at those times which are similar to first and second shift employees. Security cameras are positioned at strategic locations, and the properties are fenced.

Unlike apartments, these units do not require a long term lease. In most situations rental can be daily, weekly or monthly, and there could be a security deposit and set up fees. Ask about any specials they may be conducting, in case part of the deal is to waive these charges. If needed, there may be some discounts on agreeing to a certain number of months of rental use.

Businesses and professional services, such as doctors offices, may be required to keep records in hard copy document format for a specified period of time. The volume of file boxes can become so large that it hinders effective office space. When this happens they rent self storage units to keep the records safe, and save money by not having to build a new building.

Regardless of economic times, many families start their own business to make extra money, or replace income lost from a job reduction. They may soon find that their home is no longer big enough to keep all the merchandise and stock, and they rent a self storage unit to keep all of the items more organized. Putting up some shelving can create a lot of effective room, in one of these units, and their business can continue to grow for some time.

There can be unexpected times for needing a unit, when a family member passes away, and the Estate must be settled. Sometimes these can include priceless items, such as antiques, which should not be exposed to extremes of temperature. Climate controlled units can come in handy for these situations, and keep all of the possessions safely secured.

A job promotion, starting a new career and moving to a different city, or needing room to keep records and product cases, can all be good reasons to rent the use of a self storage unit. They are available in many different sizes, and can even be climate controlled for use as a data storage facility.
