Using metal as the primary material for a structure is more popular than ever at the moment. With the advantages of inexpensive, environmentally friendly materials, quicker construction and stronger components, many people are looking to use more modern style buildings. In many ways, these structures may be simpler to put up than those using more traditional materials. Nevertheless, without knowing how to build a steel building, there will be a great deal of difficulty to face.

To begin with, constructing any metal structure like this will require a steel building kit. These are easily available online and are often made to exact specifications and measurements. In the case of larger structures, such as houses, the expertise of a professional contractor will be necessary as well.

Once the kit is ready, the first step in construction will usually be the concrete foundation. Some people prefer to do this themselves. That can save money. However, if done incorrectly, it will create problems for the rest of construction. A professional foundation contractor will make sure that the foundation is flat and that the bolts are put in securely and in their proper places.

After the foundation has been completed, the framing begins. Some metal structures use a blend of metal and wood for framing, while others use only metal. In both cases, the frame and supports are anchored to the foundation with bolts. Either way, using metal in the framing makes construction much simpler because of its strength. The primary part of this consists of using the heavier rafters and I-beams. This creates enough support for the secondary part of framing to take place.

In secondary framing, girts and purlins are put in. They strengthen the walls and roof of the structure. Once that has been completed, the roof and walls may be put into place. The roof of a metal structure can be either slightly sloped, which will require especially strong and heavy columns and rafters, or it can be angled to a point, like a traditional house. The former of these will need heavy machinery to put into place.

After the rafters of the roof have been fitted and connected to the rest of the frame, the wall and roof panels can be connected. These panels can be attached using a screw gun. The panels are available in a variety of colors. They are also available in fiberglass that will allow light to filter through.

When all previous steps have been completed, the last part of construction is the trim. This secures the structure fully. At the same time, windows and doors can now be added where necessary.

Knowing how to build a steel building is mainly based on understanding how the metal differs from other materials. If constructed correctly, the structure should have few openings because the panels should fit securely together. The trim should take care of the rest, sealing the structure more fully. Because metal is not very good at transferring heat, insulation may be required depending on what the structure will be used for.
