Every homeowner knows just how expensive it can be just to get a plumber to come out and check out your plumbing problems let a lone work on it. What is really irritating is that they'll charge you a crisp $100 for just sticking a darn wire down the drain to unclog it. Hello? Couldn't you have done that? Sure could and with a little bit of basic plumbing training you'll be able to save yourself some money.

One of the easiest and best things to do is to go out and get yourself a book that will introduce you to how all of the pipes and faucets and the entire system works in your home. Then you can include in that purchase a general home do it yourself book that will show you how to fix those easier problems that your local plumber is charging you a hundred bucks for. Both of these types of books will help you save a lot of money and they will earn every penny you spent on them.

You can also get videos where you can sit and watch real plumbers doing the work right on your TV screen. The books mentioned above are great and will always have pictures included, there is nothing better than seeing the work actually being done. These types of instructional videos are of great help and you can purchase them from a variety of different sources. You can find videos that will show you how to find and turn off your water main to the house all the way to repairing that broken pipe that's giving you grief.

Another thing you might want to consider doing is checking with your local community college and see if they offer any courses that you can take that teaches basic plumbing. By doing this you will get a more hands on type of training and it could include anything from unclogging the kitchen sink to actually installing some new pipes.

You can also get a hold of the different hardware stores and home improvement stores and see if they offer any kind of short courses for their customers. Some of these courses are just a few hours long but will cover specific issues that might help you with your needs.

You might also want to find out if there are any local plumbing schools in your area that might be willing to let you take a few of their classes. These would be extremely beneficial because this would be the kind of true hands on training that would really help you understand how to fix problems.

Another thing, after you have done all or any of the above ideas, you might want to consider becoming a plumber yourself, after all you might discover that not only can you save money but you can earn a lot as well.

If you are serious about something like this consider working in an apprentice program. This will allow work side by side with a plumber who has been doing this kind of work for years. This is probably one of the best ways to gain experience and knowledge. Make sure that you find a plumber that is experienced in both installations that are new as well as working on old systems for repairs. This way you'll get to learn all aspects of the job.
