In the play the Music Man the town is in upheaval because a pool hall has come to town, right here in River City. "Oh, we got trouble right here in River City, with a capital 'T' and that rhymes with 'P' and that stands for 'pool'. The older folks in town thought all that pool playing was going to lead to the delinquency of their youth.
The adults in the Music Man also worried that their youth were rebuckling their knickerbockers below the knee, and using words like "swell" and "old man". Serious problems right there in River City. What we wouldn't give if those were the trails and "corruptions" facing our youth today!
Pool is a wonderful pastime for both adults and youth. A little friendly competition is a good thing, hand-eye coordination is improved, and people just relax when shooting a round of pool. A pool table is a great icebreaker for a party. People feel awkward standing around with a drink in their hand looking for someone safe to talk to, but a pool table puts people at ease, gives them something to do and something to talk about. Pool has been around for centuries. It was originally played on the lawn and that is why the felt on a pool table is always green, representing the lawn. Napoleon played pool and so have nobles, dukes and kings before him.
