Many people do not yet understand that we live in the future. The amount and number of technologies available make just about anything possible. The only limit is imagination. The evolution of the mobile phone and portable computing has really changed everything. There are services that can monitor your phone's location and automatically "check-in" to favorite spots and let your friends know when you leave. This seemingly small advance is powering a revolution in localized marketing and localized services.
In the 1960's there were tons of these "future concept homes" that showed homes where no house work was needed. Now that piece may not quite be in place yet but there is plenty in the way home automation that can make a home the home of the future. New York home automation, especially, is setting the trend. Electronic systems can be built that hook into door locks, lights, tvs, radios, garage doors, alarm systems, cameras and just about anything else imaginable. There are apps for most mobile phones to hook in controls for these home automation systems. Imagine the next time you're away from home and you start wondering if you turned off the lights, or locked the doors. A few taps on a smart phone and then whole thing is done.
It's even possible to use the same location based technologies used for local targeting to automatically trigger events. When you drive into the driveway you can train your home to turn on the lights, unlock the front door, play your favorite music and send a text to your family to alert them that you're home. It's very similar to the technology used in high-end cars that makes the start as your walk towards them. This kind of automation makes everything easier. There was a time when people didn't use TV remotes and instead had to rise from their couches every time a new channel was requested. The level of home automation is currently pretty amazing. Within a few years any home without automation built-in will feel like a TV without a remote. People become confused if the lights in a room do not automatically dim when a movie is started or wonder why all the effort of getting up is required to lock doors. All of these things can easily be managed with a little technology. With any luck, you'll soon have a fridge that tweets when it's running low on milk. Well, that last one will have to wait.
