Finding A Solution To Some Common Winter-Related Car Problems

When the days grow shorter and the temperatures begins to drop, we know that the cold season has begun. This is the time for common winter-related car problems to surface, disrupting our commuting schedules, wreaking havoc on our inner peace, and making it necessary to call for help.

All of us are aware that we should perform routine seasonal maintenance, but that advice is routinely ignored. The icy wind is hard not only on living creatures, but wreaks havoc on machines, too. One of the biggest problems people routinely encounter is trouble getting the car started.

In cold temperatures the battery suffers. The amperage required to start things up on a warm day is often cut in half. A battery that is under-performing may start up with no problems on a balmy summer morning, but may not accomplish that same feat when temperatures plummet. In many large cities, cars are often parked on the street, and the starter mechanism and associated parts may become frozen. The battery will be unable to budge them.

The solution to that particular problem is, of course, preventive maintenance. Batteries need regular servicing, but to avoid injury from battery acid, many people prefer to let a qualified mechanic do the job. A simple checkup may save lost wages when a dead battery prevents you from getting to work. Plus, there is real danger when a car is stranded in the cold.

During very cold weather, the fuel and fuel lines may be adversely affected. When a tank full of gasoline condenses, it may produce up to a pint of fluid. The problem occurs when the engine is turned off, and that same condensation forms inside fuel lines. The gasoline is unable to reach the throttle, and multiple attempts to start the car only make things worse, ending in damage to the starter mechanism.

One way to avoid this is by using the proper "dry" gasoline if your car can handle it. Dry gas means that the fuel has had its hydrocarbons removed, and is basically ethanol. Ethanol can act as an antifreeze, allowing proper combustion. Be careful, however, because some cars equipped with fuel injection may actually run worse. It is a good idea to check with your mechanic before putting any in the tank.

The oil and coolants in the engine are important no matter the season. Although the oil plays no direct part in the actual start-up, using a thinner weight can prevent coagulation in extremely low temperatures. The oil needs to be able to move into the engine once it starts, and thick oil may end up causing overheating. Coolant contains antifreeze, which needs to be properly mixed in order to avoid possible engine block damage if overheating occurs.

If the car fails for any cold-related reason, be sure that you carry a kit for such common winter-related car problems. It should contain a first aid pack, of course, but in cold weather you also need to carry jumper cables. In addition, every motorist living in very cold regions should always carry extra gloves and a hat, duct tape, a flashlight, and easily stored food such as granola bars and water. In dangerous circumstances these simple items could become lifesavers.
