There is no peace of mind like the smooth ride of a clean, well-functioning automobile. In Chicago there are a whole host of automobiles with a whole host of drivers which means safety is at the forefront. Everyone remembers their mother telling them that they weren't worried about your driving, but rather, everyone else's'. But if your car is safe and you can remain alert enough to avoid the other drivers trying to take over the road then it's nice to have something with a little flash. In Chicago, Subaru has made a pretty good footprint. A nice blue WRX is both fast and safe.
All-wheel drive is one of the great features available in many cars. All-wheel drive cars are much safer than their two-wheel drive counterparts. They have a better connection to the road and the power to all four-wheels will make it easier to drive in adverse weather. A two-wheel drive car will often "float" to one side which is dangerous. When driving around a corner, having only two wheels pushing creates a situation where the front and back of the car have different amounts of friction. Soon the car will slide and can likely cause an accident. An all-wheel-drive car provides equal power to all wheels at all times. Some even have advanced slip detection to balance out friction on the fly. This keeps cars on the road and tires from slipping.
In Chicago winters can be brutal, the high humidity and snow fall can push lots of ice onto the road in a very short amount of time, as a results having a good car with good tires and a good drive-train is imperative to keeping safe. Driving slow and being more careful is extremely important, but when the roads get this bad you need to make sure you have the right equipment on your vehicle.
Lots of people don't understand the difference between 4-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. It's not hard to remember though, 4-wheel-drive cars do not always use four wheels. They can usually be switched from 2-wheel-drive to 4-wheel-drive on the fly. All-wheel-drive cars always use four wheels. Just remember that the "all" in all-wheel-drive means "all the time."
There is often a small hit to fuel efficiency from driving with all four wheels but most car manufactures take that into account in the design and will make extra efforts to keep fuel efficiency reasonable. Just check the label on a new car and you'll be good to go.
