Towards the mid 1900s, the first use of stainless steel in a building was incorporated. Since then, steel has been used more in various structures, and the type used has been altered in accordance with this. This is to make the metal more suitable for architectural purposes. There are several types of steel buildings that exist nowadays. All of them serve different purposes and are useful in different ways.

The most common of frameworks for such a building is the I-beam style. The name comes from the fact the beams used resemble the letter "I". There are two roof sections and two side walls in each truss. The trusses are assembled beforehand and then placed down with cranes. The interior section is then insulated, before metal plating is used to cover the exterior. There are few width limitations with this design. Also, these structures can be erected quickly and the components necessary are easily available.

Another variety of structure is the steel/wood hybrid. These structures use open web designs. The foundation is usually made of concrete. The trusses are bolted to them. Connected to the frame are wood purlins and girts. Finally, metal is sheeted over the exterior. A variety of materials can be used during the finish, rather than metal. This building is well built for interior finishing. It also insulates better than many other types of frameworks.

The Quonset hut is the most commonly known steel framework. This can be the least expensive class of these structures because it has no frame. Instead, the metal is connected to the foundation, and then comes up in walls that curve over the top in a dome-like fashion. There are two sub-categories of this type of structure. The traditional style curves from the foundation. The more modern version, however, has straight walls that curve over the top.

The Quonset hut is most often used for agricultural purposes. It is secure in that it is difficult to break into. It is also favored because it is relatively easy to put together and disassemble. In construction terms, the Quonset is known as an arch type. This classification comes about because due to the curved roof. The other type of building is a straight-walled one. These classifications refer to the external shapes structures.

The internal design of these structures is referred to as clear span. This means that the structures are primarily supported by overhead beams. This reduces the need for support columns inside the these structures.

If, however, the width of the building is broad enough to require additional supports, then the clear span becomes less cost-effective. The basis of the clear span style is that it leaves a larger open space within the structure. This is because the internal, vertical supports are minimized or replaced entirely.

Besides the clear span frame, there are two other frames that are used in industrial types of steel buildings. The modular frame is the second variety of frames. It is similar to the clear span but uses interior support columns as well to distribute the weight more evenly. The other sort of frame is the single slope frame, which uses a flat roof design. The front of the roof, in this design, is lower than the rear.
