There are several advantages to assembling engineered metal structures as opposed to using conventional construction methods. Learning how to build a metal building and doing at least some of the work yourself can make the structure you desire affordable. All you need is to be physically able to do the work, have some basic skills and tools and follow the plan.

Metal construction is a cost effective way of obtaining practically any type of enclosure. Everything from barns, garages, shops and manufacturing plants to homes, churches and business offices have been built this way, at up to 60% savings in construction cost. They can be structurally strong, durable and efficient to maintain and heat or cool. They can be attractively designed to fit into any environment.

These kits are engineered for your purposes, pre-fabricated, and shipped to your site with assembly instructions. Help and advice should be available to you before and during assembly. Otherwise it's up to you whether to have contractors do the work, or to do it yourself, with the help of some friends.

The first consideration will be where to locate the structure and how it will be situated. Take into consideration the future uses of the structure, door locations, and it's relationship to existing structures, roads, and water and electric lines.

We all know that if you build a building on a bad foundation it will not last. Therefore it is vitally important that, whether you are going to build on a slab or have a dirt floor, you need to insure that the foundation is good and anchor bolts properly placed. A contractor is recommended for this step, unless you have done this type of work before.

Next is to assemble the arches or I beams and rafters. These can be assembled on the ground and lifted, or lifted and assembled depending on structure type. You will need some type of lift for this phase. After that, begin with the secondary framing. With each piece that is bolted or screwed into place you will see the structure becoming stronger.

After that step, you can install wall insulation and cover it with the sheeting. After doing the same with the roof panels and weather stripping, your building will be enclosed. To finish, install the accessories like doors, windows, vents and trim. Plumbing and electricity will be added, if desired, before any inside wall finishing.

Now that you have a basic understanding of how to build a metal building you can decide whether you could be able to do this project yourself. If you think this may work for you, start getting more detailed instruction from the supplier. Start looking at purchasing or renting the tools and equipment you will need. Once you know the total cost, and compare it with what a contractor will charge you for the work, you will probably have not difficulty making your decision. If you do opt to have it professionally erected, you will still save considerably on materials and construction costs.
