The Roto-Rooter has an interesting history. It started in the late 1920's when future founder, Samuel Oscan Blanch got frustrated after trying to remove some roots and debris from a clogged drain unsuccessfully at his son's apartment and decided to take matters into his own hands. By 1933, he and Milton Blanch had fashioned a contraption out of a washing machine motor, some roller skates, and a sturdy steel cable. That contraption would later become the pilot version of what is now known as the "Roto-Rooter".
The greatest advantage to the Roto-Rooter, and the reason it has become a company of 3,000 employees is because of its unique features that make a plumber's job much easier. The basic function of the machine is to clear trees and roots from sewer lines without having to dig up the pipe through the grass if the problem is outside in a yard or hammer through cement if it's a sewer line inside a building or house. Because of it's originality and functionality, the product became very successful. During the Depression, many jobless hopefuls started up their own businesses selling roto-rooters. In the thirties, the machine was selling for $250 a piece. In 1954, because of the rapid growth of the product, Roto-Rooter began to expand their marketing approach and created a jingle. The jingle to this day is one of the longest-running, best-remembered jingles in history.
"Call roto-rooter, that's the name
And away goes troubles down the drain."
Roto-rooter is based out of Des Moines, Iowa, and now has it's own line of products in addition to the roto-rooter machine. Products include rootx, a root destroyer; pipe shield, a solution that keeps pipes build-up free; and a septic tank treatment. Roto-Rooter also doesn't just sell products and their patented machine, they have an in-home service where they go to the customer's house and clean out the pipes themselves.
The Roto-Rooter has become a plumber's best friend. They are now a common thing to see in plumbers' trucks, cars, and offices. From Bronx plumbers to Miami plumbers, they all depend on their Rotor-Rooter and feel unprepared when they don't have it in case someone were to come to them with a "root" problem. There is very little competition, and for that the company has grown to the widespread, 3,000 employing corporation it is today. They celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2005. That's a pretty good history for starting as a root problem solver.
