We live in a busy, busy world. We're expected to juggle careers, family life, and numerous social obligations. But let's face it: when something comes up, time with our families often takes a backseat, especially when our children get involved in activities of their own.
So how can you bring your whole family together for quality time? Well, it's not always easy, but with an innovative approach, you can all can work toward bonding by having fun together. Let this advice guide you on your quest to bring your family closer.
First, it's important for you to be a good sport about the things your kids enjoy. One of the biggest obstacles to my family's quality time was my mother's unwillingness to participate in the sports and outings we loved. Sure, flag football may not be your favorite pastime, but all your loved ones will appreciate your enthusiasm, and you will all create valued memories to last for years.
Be willing to try most anything once when your kids make suggestions. If you truly don't enjoy it, then you can still encourage your kids to participate together and/or the other parent to take charge of that particular activity.
Engage in age-appropriate activities. It can be difficult to choose those when there is a large gap in the ages of your children, so pay attention to the recommendations listed on video and board games. Many common board games can be understood and played by kids in a range of ages.
Don't forget to be active. Establishing a family with healthy habits will benefit your kids as they grow to adulthood. Hiking, biking, or even just kicking a soccer ball around the yard are all ways in which you can get moving and enjoy being together.
If you have older kids, then they might want more intensive outings. Laser tag and paintball are favorites among boys and girls alike, but make sure that you rent and enforce the use of protective gear and all facility rules are followed. Kids can get carried away, but you don't want serious injury to result from good fun.
I highly recommend that you allot some time each week to spend exclusively with your family. Be consistent, and avoid allowing your older children to run off to socialize with others. This can be difficult to enforce, as kids involved in extracurriculars may need to attend rehearsals or practices, but do your best. Your children will thank you for that someday.
