The emergence of porcelain floor tiles as a viable alternative to ceramic or natural stone has been a phenomenon that is gaining ground even as more and more people are discovering its many attributes and advantages. The demand for hard tiles over the last many years has been on the increase with many people doing away with carpets due to the inherent difficulties and inconveniences of maintaining it.

This article will dwell on some of the apparent advantages but it appears that one of the most compelling reasons is the fact that manufacturers are able to come out with a wide range of sizes, patterns and finishes resembling natural stone. Add easy maintenance, durability and great looks to these and you have a product that is a clear winner. People are thus willing to look beyond granite, marble, travertine and other such natural stone items and are not hesitating to pay even a higher price for top quality material and workmanship.

Broadly, the reasons given below should give you enough indications of what makes porcelain the preferred material for tiles.

a) This material has a wonderful impervious nature to water, rendering it ideal for bathroom as well as kitchen flooring. It goes without saying that this aspect becomes so much more important when viewed from the perspective of slip free flooring in these areas, where the susceptibility and vulnerability of children and elders to accidents are the maximum.

b) It does not chip or get scratched easily and hence retains its lustre for a long period of time.

c) Size is no longer a constraint with large dimensions now being made by most manufacturers, which lends the room a grand look with clean lines.

d) Its natural resistance to frost is making it the preferred choice for even outdoor tiling.

e) Porcelain does not get affected by mold, staining or bleaching and does not even need any sealing to ensure that the tiles remain in place and stay fixed.

f) Not many people are aware that porcelain is tougher than even granite and that is really saying a lot considering that the general impression about granite being the toughest stone still prevails amongst most people.

Having said the above, it needs mention that porcelain floor tiles need to be laid properly as well and that is where the skills of the mason come into play. The good news is that earlier perceptions of difficulty cutting porcelain according to requirements no longer prevail and masons do not have to invest in an expensive cutter to design the shapes they want. It is therefore imperative that having spent money on the best quality you can find for porcelain, you do not cut corners when it comes to selecting the best mason for the job of laying these tiles.

Labour is expensive but you must remember that it would be an investment well made considering the long years of service these tiles would give you as well as the boost in your property value when you do decide to sell it.
