One of the main reasons that people choose to use porcelain as their floor tile material is the fact that not only are they variable, but they are available in many more sizes and colors when compared to the more common ceramic tiles. Due to the fact that porcelain floor tiles are known for their strong durability and superior resistance to most materials and moisture they can be made to reach upwards of 24 inches in size per tile versus ceramic which have to be much smaller because otherwise they would snap when any weight was pressed upon them.

This is not to say that you should choose porcelain floor tiles just because they are larger, because while they may seem like a quicker installation job size has actually nothing to do with it. Instead, the size actually makes it harder to lay the tiles because you need to be much more careful with each tile and the larger area means that while you may line up two tiles next to each other aligned properly, this may not be true when you move a little bit farther down the tiling task. If you want to create a simple design with overstated accents however the larger tiles can be an excellent choice.

Other problems that come with the larger size of the tiles have to do with laying, because due to their heavier weight and larger area you may not be able to handle the task on your own. Instead of just slapping tiles into place, you may quickly release that the task will take two people so that the tiles do not get scratched or shattered while you are laying them. You will also need to make a thicker mortar bed that can support the extra weight which otherwise you would probably not have to worry about.

Problems aside, if you are working on an outdoor area such as a patio or extension towards the entry way of a house that will carry nicely on throughout the actual entryway porcelain floor tiles can be an excellent choice because they have a bumpy surface that provides traction even when wet since it works natural as a non-slip surface. However, if you do choose to lay the tiles outside then it is important that you use a strictly outdoors only mortar bed to help support their use over the ground.

Finally, the last reason that people balk at ceramic tiles is actually one of the top reasons that they should consider using porcelain over ceramic: the cost. Many people mistakenly believe that due to the fact that porcelain flooring is more expensive than ceramic that it is the more costly purchase. This is actually far from the truth given the fact that upfront the cost may be a bit higher, but in the long term it is much cheaper since it is durable flooring and most likely if cleaned and placed properly will last a life time making it much more cost effective then continually replacing ceramic tiles over time.
