The power bill is often one of the largest expenses, after paying for the home itself, that a typical homeowner has to pay. However, there are so many different ways to save on energy and ways that you cut this bill.
While it may take an initial investment of purchasing better equipment that is more energy efficient, the choice to make those purchases now can save you a lot of money on your power bill in the long term. While you will not realize the benefit of energy efficient appliances right away, you will also be contributing to helping take care of the environment through your efforts.
One of the areas that is often overlooked in terms of energy efficiency in the home is the home office. Many people use their office constantly because they work from home. In 2000, almost 4.2 million people worked from home in the United States.
This is an increase from 1990, during which only 3.4 million people worked from home. The number has probably increased dramatically from this point as well.
Working from home saves energy for the company and it also saves time for the worker as the worker does not have to commute. Unfortunately, it does add to the worker's personal power bill.
There are many electronics that are typically found in a home office. For example, you may have a printer, computer, scanner, and other equipment specific to your task.
The type of electronics you choose can have a huge impact on your bill. When you look around for the best option for your home office, you will want to look for electronics that have the energy star label.
This label indicates that the item uses electricity efficiently. For a few items, this label indicates up to 90 percent savings in usage of electricity.
The savings of 90 percent indicates that you will save a lot on your bill as well. For the typical item that has this label, it will use 50 percent less electricity.
Not only do these labels often indicate savings, but they often indicate that the equipment works better in terms of air-conditioning loads, less noise produced from internal fans or transformers, and less electromagnetic field emissions from monitors. Energy star labels can be found on computers, copiers, fax machines, monitors, multifunction devices, printers and scanners.
There are other ways that you save money as well. For example, when you are not using your home office, you will want to make sure that you turn off all of the equipment so that you do not use unnecessary amounts of electricity.
Most machines can turn on and off in under a minute, so it will not take you very much time to save money in this manner. However, if you do forget to turn off your machines, energy star only labels those machines that will enter a sleep mode that uses four watts or less.
This will help reduce your power bill, even though it is much better to simply turn off the machine. The labels also indicate that the machine you are choosing may last longer and reach lower maximum temperatures while running.
This is beneficial as you will not have to worry about your children touching a hot area of the machine. It also helps you save money because you will not have to purchase a new piece of equipment as soon.
You can help boost your savings by adding an AC adapter to your laptop as well. The AC adaptor should be connected to the power strip and it allows you to turn off the power easily with one button.
If you have trouble stopping your work for dinner, you can even set some of these AC adaptors to a timed turnoff. This will force you to stop working at a certain time.
One reason that people do not turn off their machines is that they believe it will last longer if they do not turn it off. While this may apply to older versions of the computers that are used today, it definitely does not apply to the computers that are used now.
One thing you will have to keep in mind with energy star labels and your computer is that it will only save energy as long as the power management features are turned on. If this is not turned on, it will not reduce the amount of energy that you are using.
There are many ways you can save on your power bill through changing things in your home office. Try to keep a few of these things in mind as you go shopping.
