With the advent of internet-based travel planning, so too has come the explosion of "last-minute" travel deals. Many of us have taken the occasional impulsive weekend getaway, but these kinds of deals have made it possible to have a quality vacation for a jaw-dropping price.
However, booking your getaway isn't always as simple as going through a few keystrokes. If you're hoping to take a trip in a short period of time but don't want to pay through the nose for it, then these tips can help you have a carefree last-minute escape, so pay attention!
Be sure to be thorough when you're surfing travel sites and comparing prices. Whenever you begin your investigations, only book through reputable sites, as there are a fair share of scams out there that will snatch up your credit card information or perpetrate other types of fraud. If you're using one of the mainstream sites, this should not be an issue, but you should still always proceed with caution when providing personal information.
Most of the major booking internet locations have a section specifically designated for packages for the upcoming weekend or within another short period. Typically, the offers come in bundles that include airfare and hotel and possibly a rental car. Often, this is the most cost-effective way to cover all the major expenses of your vacation, and having them grouped together with a single travel site is convenient.
However, if something goes wrong--as they can do on occasion--then dealing with one faulty customer service department can mess you up on your flight, accommodations, and car. While this is rare, it is still a possibility. So I urge you to do your research carefully.
Look into the possibilities for your credit card airline miles and/or hotel rewards. Many of these plans include blackout dates, and you have to accept the possibility that some of your favorite hotels and/or airlines may have no room for you, but it is still worth investigating. Even if you can't have your entire trip paid for, you may still be able to get beneficial discounts.
Be flexible about your destination. If you are absolutely set on going to Las Vegas, then you might miss out on a great deal on a luxurious boutique hotel in Seattle.
Choosing a destination based on the location's "off-season" is also a good idea. One of my favorite weekend escapes is Park City in northern Utah. It's famous as a skiing town, but its mild summer temperatures and boutique shopping make it a wonderful place to stay in midsummer, but travel rates drop dramatically beginning in May, so bear that in mind as you plan.
Remember that any getaway, spontaneous or not, should be fun and relaxing. Sometimes that involves taking a simple stay-cation; other times, it requires more of an investment. Just do what you need to in order to have the best time possible.
