Cuba has often been described as a tropical paradise by its many visitors who regularly return to soak up the sun and take in the sights. There aren't many places in the world that can boast such an array of beautiful beaches, so it's not surprising that tourism is on the increase, with Canadians contributing to the largest number of visitors as they seek out some winter sun.

It's not just the soft stretches of white sand and subtropical seas that entice visitors. When tourists grow tired of sunbathing, they find plenty of other things to entertain them on their vacation. Scuba diving or snorkelling are great ways to relax. With calm waters and shallow coral reefs hugging the shoreline, there's always plenty to see below the surface too.

In contrast to the swathes of sand, sea and sky, forested mountains wait for hikers and ancient caves where Indian bones have been found, are ready to explore. There are also many interesting towns to visit for a spot of shopping, and those keen to soak up the local culture will find the inhabitants engaging and helpful.

Fast food outlets can be found in Cuba, as anywhere else, but it also has plenty of interesting places to eat and drink for those who are looking for something more authentic. Cuban dishes are an interesting blend of Spanish, African and Asian cuisine. The typical Cuban kitchen plays host to many Creole dishes. Fruit based drinks, heavily sweetened with molasses, are very popular, along with rum and beer. Daiquiris are served in all the main bars, for those that prefer something drier.

Cuban's love dance and it's possible to catch a carnival where people of all ages join in dancing the Conga in a long procession with the band following. Generally, locals party at home, as the nightlife scene would be too expensive for most of them, but others can drop into the many places available to experience live music and local culture with shows every night and dancing till late.

For those who prefer a more relaxed or romantic evening suitable venues can be found. Some are situated above other establishments and offer impressive views of the city. Music varies from the pumping beats favored by the younger visitors, Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban, European and American pop and smooth, seductive sounds.

Those looking to take a break from sun and salsa should try some of the other forms of entertainment including cinemas showing a variety of movies, both Cuban and foreign. Cuba also has a National Ballet Company that puts on many performances during the year. Theaters are often used for other purposes and don't put on many plays. There are some great parks and don't forget the cigar factories. Visitor who would like to get a feel for Cuba's past can pay a visit to a variety of historical places, like its cathedrals and castles. Museums cover a variety of topics but will always include something about the Revolution.

For an authentic shopping experience, a stroll around one of Cuba's many markets is a great way to pick up a few souvenirs. There are plenty of hand-crafted items to choose from and some music to take home that will conjure up happy moments in the Cuban sun.
