Starting any new business can be a stressful undertaking. There are a countless number of decisions to make and priorities to contemplate, the budget needs scrutinized, the new secretary quits before the end of the first week, the struggles are countless. When starting a home business on your own, you can add numerous other unique obstacles to the list. Being aware of these possible drawbacks, and planning for them can help you maintain your sanity.

Family members and friends will most likely think since you work at home you will be accessible to them all of the time. Unplanned visits from your parents or friends can set your work back hours. They might have the impression that you are semi retired, or that your business runs by itself. Setting plain and clear rules regarding your schedule and accessibility for phone calls and visits can prevent this type of misconception early on in the life of your home business.

If you are going to have your small children at home with you while you work, first off good luck! Even the most carefully planned schedule can rapidly become fodder for any three year old. My three year old thinks the computer is for watching Barney the dinosaur videos and that I am the remote control. Or while I am busy working it would be a good time to see if the dog will fit into the garbage can. Getting up a few hours before the kids is often the best way to increase your productivity while those little angels are still sound asleep.

Coming up with a contingency plan for the days when an increased workload involves more attention than normal is a great way to divert disasters before they happen. Try to find some local babysitters who are prepared to come to your house and help out when needed. Enlist friends and family to offer occasional coverage for a few hours to allow you to work without interruptions. I have a sixteen year old daughter who can help watch the tree year old, but only for an about an hour or so until the little guy starts throwing toy trucks and trains at her. But still anything that helps you keep focused even for an hour is a good investment in maintaining your sanity.

My wife and I both work at home and that can also present a major challenge in maintaining our sanity! It started out pleasant enough but when kids are screaming at each other we both think that our work is more important than the others. I usually loose this battle and have since decided that my sanity, marriage and kids come before my business. So I usually tend to my business at night or get up early in the morning to get things done.

Having your own home business does have a few benefits, most notable at tax time. Discuss your business with a tax expert or accountant early on and equip yourself with the knowledge necessary to help save you time and money when filing your first year's business taxes. You may be able to deduct some of your homes expenses, such as telephone, gas, electric, water, and others. So be sure to keep accurate records of these items as well of direct business expenses. Keeping your expense records organized throughout the year will also help maintain your sanity come April.

To maintain your sanity while working at home, use good common sense, a little street smarts and know what battles to fight, or not to fight, with your spouse. This will help you reach your home business goals, while permitting you to maintain your sanity and keep your home life together.
