It is a simple enough matter to stick to a diet for a short time but when you are having to stick to a life-long diabetic diet you will discover that there are several barriers which will hinder you in your efforts. The secret therefore to starting a diabetes diet is to understand exactly what those barriers are and to concentrate your attention on the benefits of your diabetes diet.

The sort of barriers that you might well come across include:

* Social Pressure. Bringing your family on side should be reasonably simple but it might not be quite so simple to get others on board. Of course it should be easy enough to inform your close friends and extended family about your dietary needs and help to avoid embarrassment at dinner parties and other gatherings at which food is served, but there are inevitably going to be occasions when you find yourself in a social situation and cannot resist trying a piece of home-made gateaux.

Here it is a matter of planning ahead and deciding precisely what you will do before the event. For instance, you could decide to have a small piece of gateaux and simply adjust your diet for the remainder of the day to compensate. Another option might be to choose to eat before you go out or to take along your own favorite snack, plus a bit extra for other guests to try.

* Cost. Buying vegetables and fresh fruit is not cheap, especially when you are having to buy 'out of season' imported products. But do not forget that, as you increase your consumption of vegetables and fresh fruit, you are also lowering your consumption of expensive convenience foods and snack items like potato chips, so the two will even out.

* Family. Some family member might find it hard to come to terms with a different diet and they might be less than happy with your 'alternative' macaroni cheese. Here the best policy is to simply sit down with the family and discuss your diabetes and exactly what it means as far as your diet is concerned. In nearly all cases the family will be extremely supportive once they understand your position.

* Culture. Food is considerably than mere sustenance and for many of us it is also very much an expression of culture. Fortunately, there are a lot of different ways in which to prepare food and you will discover that there are a number of superb diabetes cookbooks focusing on food from individual cultures.

However you choose to deal with these barriers, they need to be faced and overcome. This should not be too hard as long as you give it a bit of thought and some effort, but it will also help if you focus your thoughts on a few of the benefits of following your diabetic diet:

* Better weight control. With your diabetes diet you will not overeat or eat food which may lead to weight gain, allowing you to keep your figure and also lessening the risk of other health problems like heart disease and stroke.

* Feeling better. Without your diet there is a good possibility that you will overeat, or eat the wrong type of food, increasing your blood sugar level and making you tired and generally unwell. However, with your diabetes diet you will feel much healthier.

* Lessen your risk from low blood sugar levels. We tend to think of diabetes in terms of high blood sugar levels but many diabetics also experience the problems associated with low blood sugar levels, such as, weakness, dizziness, sweating and irritability, and may even fall into a diabetic coma. Your diabetes diet will keep you on a regular eating pattern which will lower this risk significantly.

With the correct diabetes diet, as well as a bit of exercise, you will discover that you can keep your diabetes under control and enjoy a full and normal life.
