For the majority of college students the very last thing they think about is health insurance as is revealed by some recently published statistics that show that about one out of three college students have no form of health insurance. Starting college is a costly undertaking and simply finding the money you have to have and taking out your college loans is hard enough, but you should also consider including some form of health insurance alongside everything else which you will need to have.

You should of course start by investigating your parents' health plan if this applies as it is possible that it will cover you while you are at university. You do however want to read the small print very carefully because some plans will cover you whilst you are attending college while others will not. Two items that you need to look for in particular are location and age.

Many insurance plans will provide cover for children up to the age of either 18 or 21 while you are at home and a number of plans will extend this age limit as long as you remain in full-time education. Many plans are however limited to cover within a specified geographic area and so, although you may meet the age requirements of the plan, you might find that you will not be covered when you are studying away from home.

When your parents' plan will not give you the health cover you need then you will have to arrange your own student health insurance and will need to look for suitable providers. Luckily, this is not too hard and there are several insurers who provide plans specifically designed for college students. So, where do you start your search?

Initially you should look at your own university as colleges will normally arrange for their students to get cover at a discounted rate. This does not necessarily mean that this is the best plan to meet your own circumstances and you will have to look at the details to ensure that it meets your needs. Even so your own college is an excellent place to start your search and will often provide you with the best deal. Another thing to consider when looking at your own university is just what type of medical facilities they provide on campus. A lot of the larger colleges will have excellent medical facilities that are open 24 hours a day, while the majority of the smaller colleges will have far more limited facilities.

Apart from the university itself you can look to the many health insurers as well as a number of publicly funded organizations for health cover. As well, do not forget that there are several different types of plan that are targeted at different groups of students. For instance, short-term health insurance may suit many graduate students and can often be extended following graduation to cover you until you get a job and become eligible for an employer's health plan. In addition, there are supplemental plans that will provide cover for you for things such as pre-existing medical conditions that are often excluded from standard student cover.

Health insurance these days is a complicated subject and you will need to shop around to get a plan that both meets your requirements and also fits your pocketbook. This is nevertheless one thing that you should not ignore because attending college is an expensive enough undertaking in the first place and you do not want to risk your money or your future simply because you are unable to meet the cost of injury or illness.
