A new job is cause for celebration. You should feel happy and secure in the knowledge that someone thought enough of you to hire you. But what happens when that giddy relief wears off and all that’s left is to start? Beginning a new job is a daunting experience for even the most confident of people but there are ways in which to put yourself at ease.
Before you go to work on your first day of your new accountancy job, it is important that you feel as prepared as possible. Go online and research your new company and job role. It would be helpful for you to call the company before you start to ask any questions you may have to someone who might be able to give you accurate answers.
The trick is to equate yourself as much as possible with your new position. Find out what the dress code is to ensure that you don’t arrive on your first day looking smart and professional only to find everyone else wearing trainers and jeans!
On your first day you will most likely feel overwhelmed. Everyone feels this way but bear in mind that it is virtually impossible to know exactly what you are doing after a few hours. After you’ve broken the ice, you can begin to prepare yourself more gradually. It is best to introduce yourself to everyone on your first day. This way you can begin work out who people are and how you and your job role relates to others.
Watch what happens around you and try to fit into communication channels that have already been established. For example, if you boss calls you when he/she wants to talk to you, you should reciprocate in the same way when the tables are turned as opposed to sending an email or bothering him/her face to face.
On your first day, it is not too much to ask your boss for a job specification and brief. This is when your employer will go through a list of all your duties, and explain each in detail. This is to ensure that you know what your job role is and where your boundaries lie. Your new employer will expect questions over the first few weeks so take advantage of this and ask whenever you do not understand – you will not be penalized for doing so!
Finally, remember to be positive. Do not complain, talk too much about your previous position or criticize old work collogues or new ones. You want to make a great first impression which will ultimately, help you to find your feet a lot quicker.
